What We Know
This new version of Little House on the Prairie is drawn from the third book in Laura Ingalls Wilder's series, following the Ingalls family as they try to build a life on the edge of Independence, Kansas. Fever, wolves, and fire test them at every turn — the same hardships longtime readers of the books will recognize. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine, a lifelong fan of the source material, built the series around the idea of a family reinventing itself against near-impossible odds.
The adaptation also widens the lens beyond the Ingalls household, introducing the Mitchell family and the wider Osage community whose home the settlers arrive on — telling both sides of a story the earlier adaptations largely left out.

About the Books
Laura Ingalls Wilder's semi-autobiographical Little House series has been in print since the 1930s, selling more than 73 million copies across over 100 countries. This is the second time the books have been adapted for television, following the long-running 1970s–80s NBC series produced by Ed Friendly — whose son and granddaughter, Trip and Rebecca Friendly, now help steward the property as executive producers on this version.
Our Take
Rebooting a story this beloved is risky, but Sonnenshine's decades-long attachment to the source material shows in the choice to widen the story rather than just modernize it. Whether it satisfies purists of the '70s series or newcomers to Wilder's books, it's the most ambitious swing at this material in nearly fifty years — and Season 2 is already locked in.
