๐จ Spoilers ahead. That's the whole point. If you wanted to be surprised, you should have read the book.
The animals of Manor Farm hear Old Major's dream of a world without humans. He dies, and the pigs Snowball and Napoleon lead a revolt that drives Mr. Jones out. Snowball plans a windmill. Napoleon's dogs chase him off, and Napoleon rules, with Squealer spinning every lie. Boxer the horse works himself to collapse and is sold to a knacker. The pigs walk on two legs, drink whiskey, and rewrite the Commandments. Finally they dine with neighboring farmers, and the animals can't tell pig from human. Equality does not survive.
- T. S. Eliot turned it down. As a director at Faber and Faber, Eliot rejected the manuscript in 1944. Other publishers also passed before Secker & Warburg brought it out in 1945.
- The title page calls it a fairy story. The full title reads 'Animal Farm: A Fairy Story.' That is a dry subtitle for a book where a pig dictator has his rivals chased off by dogs.
- It got a Ukrainian edition for refugees. Orwell wrote a new preface for a 1947 Ukrainian translation printed for displaced persons in Germany. The book was already being read as more than a barnyard story.
- โOld Major leads the revolt against Jones.โ Dead before launch. Old Major dies peacefully three nights after his speech. Snowball and Napoleon, two other pigs, organize the Rebellion and drive Mr. Jones off the farm.
- โBoxer retires to a quiet pasture.โ Pasture? Hardly. Boxer collapses and a van from a horse slaughterer arrives. Squealer claims he died in hospital, and the pigs somehow find money for a case of whiskey.
- โSnowball is the traitor who ruined everything.โ Framed, actually. Napoleon's dogs chase Snowball off the farm, then Squealer blames him for every setback, including the wrecked windmill. Napoleon is the one who grabs power.
- If they say: โIsn't this just a book about Stalin?โ
You say: โMostly, yes. Napoleon is Stalin and Snowball is Trotsky. But I'd add that Squealer shows how propaganda keeps any strongman in power, in any country.โ - If they say: โWasn't the slogan just 'four legs good'?โ
You say: โThat's the sheep chant, and it changes. Once the pigs walk upright it becomes 'Four legs good, two legs better.' By then the Seven Commandments have been shrunk to a single line.โ
