What the Critics Are Saying
Critics who have seen the first four episodes are calling Season 3 the strongest chapter of the show yet. Words like "transcendent," "spectacular," "gripping," and "devastating" have appeared across early reviews, with several noting that the season kicks off with the Battle of the Gullet — one of the most anticipated sequences in the entire Targaryen saga. A fourth and final season has already been ordered, with the finale expected in 2028.
What We Know
George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood is unlike any other book in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe — written as an in-universe historical chronicle rather than a traditional novel, it covers 300 years of Targaryen history with the sweep of Gibbon's Decline and Fall. House of the Dragon has been mining its most explosive chapter: the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war that tore the dynasty apart. Season 3 picks up right in the thick of it, opening with the Battle of the Gullet in a 72-minute premiere that critics say sets the tone for the most ambitious season yet. Eight episodes, weekly on Sundays, with the finale landing August 9th. If you've never read Fire & Blood, this is the summer to fix that.
