What We Know
In 2015, Hayley Kiyoko released a music video for "Girls Like Girls" that became something far bigger than a song — a genuinely rare piece of queer mainstream media at a time when there was almost none, and an anthem for a generation of young women who had never seen themselves reflected back. A decade later, Kiyoko has expanded that story into a NYT bestselling novel and now a feature film, which she directed herself and co-wrote with Stefanie Scott. The film follows 17-year-old Coley, who arrives in rural Oregon after losing her mother and meets Sonya — and finds, for the first time, that the love she's been afraid to want might be the one worth fighting for. It's Kiyoko's feature directorial debut, produced by Focus Features, and it arrives in theaters today — just in time for Pride month. The original 2015 track features alongside all-new music composed by Kiyoko for the film.
